ALL THAT YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT DENTAL IMPLANTS

WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS ?

Dental Implants Are Artificial Replacement For A Natural Tooth. It Replaces The Root Portion Of The Natural Tooth. On To This Root Portion The Tooth Is Fixed. The dental implant is in the shape of a screw which is placed into the area where the teeth are missing.

WHO CAN GET IMPLANTS DONE? / AM I A CANDIDATE TO GET IMPLANTS DONE TO REPLACE MY TEETH ?
You Are A Candidate To Get Your Missing Teeth Replaced With Dental Implants If You Have:

    • Single Missing Tooth
    • Multiple Missing Teeth
    • Complete Teeth Set
    • If You Have Problems Such As : Difficulty In Speech, Swallowing And Eating With Your Denture
    • Ill Fitting Teeth Set
    • Uncomfortable Removable Denture
    • If You Are Currently Wearing A Denture That Replaces Only A Few Of Your Missing Teeth But Not All The Other Teeth (Partial Denture)
    • If You Have A Problem Such As Vomiting Sensation With Your Complete Denture.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF DENTAL IMPLANTS OVER THE CONVENTIONAL FORMS OF TEETH REPLACEMENT?

    • Better Eating:

    Eating
With Dental implants the chewing efficiency is similar to that of natural teeth. Therefore one can eat a wide range of food items with more comfort than with dentures. Along with that a full upper denture covers the palate of the mouth and reduces the ability to taste foods. With dental implants, you can have the palate removed from your upper denture so you can taste and enjoy your food.

    Convenience
The dental implants eliminate the need for you to take out the dentures everytime you eat and drink, you do not need to put adhesives to hold the denture in place.

    Speaking
When replacing missing teeth with dentures, the teeth can slip and slide around the mouth. The facial muscles become tense in an attempt to hold the teeth in place. This often results in mumbling, slurred speech or clicking noises. Dental implants allow you to speak with confidence in a relaxed and natural tone.

    • Better Appearance:

The teeth fixed by the use of Dental Implant integrate into your Jaw Bone so they feel like your own teeth.
The teeth fixed onto the implants can be made to match your natural teeth both in size, shape and also colour; so unless you tell no one is going to make out that you have artificial teeth.

    • Fixed teeth : Strong Teeth

Teeth with Dental implants become stable and strong. The implants integrate into your jaw bones and become a part of your body. The teeth fixed onto the implants become fixed do not shake and move like the other types of replacements

As the teeth get fixed they help you to EAT BETTER and SPEAK BETTER. You can now enjoy some of the foods which you like but could not till now due to loose teeth set (dentures)

So they will allow you to speak and eat with comfort and confidence!

    • Tooth-saving

As the implants are placed in the areas your teeth are missing ad replace the tooth, the need to grind and trim the adjacent teeth is not carried out (as it done for a fixed bridge) so the natural teeth are saved.
Your natural teeth are left untouched so there is a long term benefit to your oral health!

    • Eating With Implant Teeth!
    • You can eat and enjoy your food the way you have been eating with your natural teeth.

Your Implantologist will instruct on how to eat with your implants

The enjoyment of eating your food with implant teeth is better than with dentures or bridge

    • Dental implants Eliminate Pain and Discomfort!

The removable dentures made for replacing the missing teeth are made to sit on top of your gums. As our gums shrink over the dentures start becoming loose move and shake on the gums. As a result of this movement the gums get cut and the underlying bone gets exposed and the one starts getting pain. The discomfort of a moving denture adds to the discomfort.
The teeth fixed onto dental implants become a part of your own jaw bone so there is no moving and shaking part, this eliminates pain and discomfort. You can now enjoy everything that you could with your own natural teeth.

    • Dental Implants Save Bone!

As and when we lose our teeth the bone in the missing tooth area starts to decrease. This bone loss also affects our facial bone and the muscles. Over a short period of time you start appearing aged and weak. The face looks old. At an age of 50 years you may start appearing like a 65 year old.
The dental implants Reverse this process of bone loss and Make the jaw bone for more bone around its as if there was a natural tooth present in that area. By doing so it also maintains your facial muscle tone and keeps you look younger.

WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE FOR IMPLANTS ? and HOW LONG DO THEY LAST ?
Implants have a very success rate. A 10 year success rate of 97.5 % has now been shown and proven. This means that out of 100 implants placed 98 of them will be thee even after 10 years.
You will be happy to know that the first man to get implants placed to replace his missing teeth lived for a full 40 years after the implants were placed and died with his implants still in his mouth.
In our center which is functioning since 1994 we have a 98 % success rate.

HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
The treatment time varies from 6 weeks to 6 months depending upon the CLINICAL CONDITION.
THE DENTAL IMPLANT treatment is usually done in two phases. The Phase 1 involves placement of implant into the jaw bone and in Phase 2 the teeth are fixed on to the implants.

Phase 1.: your implantologist will place implant under local anesthesia. A period of 3-6 months of healing time will be given so that the implant bonds to your bone.

Phase 2.: in phase two the implants will be uncovered and measurements will be made to fix teeth on to your implants.

Recently there have been protocols and techniques where in the implants are placed soon after extraction of the teeth and the phase 1 and 2 are combined. These cases are selected on a strict criteria and in case you are a candidate your implantologist you inform you regarding these protocols.

    STAGES IN IMPLANT TREATMENT …!
    1. Diagnosis and treatment planning (1st sitting): after which it may be necessary to carry out repairs or treatment to any remaining teeth.

    2. Implant placement :(2nd  sitting) is usually followed by a period of initial healing for  two weeks, after which you will be given a temporary set of teeth (3rd Sitting). The entire healing period lasts about 3 months in the lower jaw and 6 months in the upper jaw.

    3. At the end of 3 months (4th sitting) in the lower jaw and at 6 months in the upper jaw the implants are uncovered

    4. Measurements (5th sitting) are made for fixing the final set of teeth.

    5. Final teeth (6th Sitting).are commonly fitted between 3 and 6 months after the implants were first placed.

6.The way that the teeth fit together is carefully adjusted so that they do not interfere with each other.

    7. Regular examination and hygiene appointments are then all that is required to maintain the health of the mouth, teeth and implants.

HOW MANY SITTINGS WILL THE TREATMENT TAKE ?
The dental implant treatment involves multiple steps. The exact number of sittings vary, depending on a case by case basis. In general it involves:
For a Single tooth Replacement and implant Supported Bridges:
    1st Sitting: treatment planning
    2nd sitting: implant placement
3rd sitting: Check up after 15-20 days after implant placement
    4th sitting: 2nd stage procedure
    5th sitting: making of measurements
6th Sitting: fixing of the teeth on implants
Follow up care : EVERY 3-6 months as planned by your implantologist.

    For Implant Denture:

A couple of steps which include making of a denture etc get added to the treatment period. Other than that there is not much of a difference in the treatment time.
