About the Department

The Craniofacial Surgery and Research Centre established in 1998 with the aim of providing quality care at affordable cost, is today a part of the extensive infrastructure of the S.D.M. College of Dental Sciences & Hospital, Dharwad, and one among a few state of the art super-speciality hospitals in the country. Spread over an area of 50000 sq. ft., the Craniofacial Surgery centre is equipped with state of the art facilities to house and treat 50 in-patients.The centre not only has attracted patients from all over the country, but also eminent surgeons of repute from different parts of the world to perform surgeries and conduct teaching sessions.

The Centre conducts major surgeries covering the following specialized areas:

  • Craniofacial Trauma
  • Cleft lip and palate
  • Oral cancer and other head and neck tumours
  • Orthognathic Surgery
  • Aesthetic Plastic surgeries
  • Microvascular surgery

The centre is well equipped with a clinical laboratory and X-ray unit under one roof. Other advanced investigations like CT / MRI Scan, Doppler Ultrasound are done at attached Medical College Hospital.

Operation Theatres

  • Two existing state of the art theatres are rated as the best internationally.
  • A closed circuit T.V. system allows the procedures to be viewed in an air-conditioned auditorium. Besides the excellent facilities, what sets these operation theatres apart is their unique design with one wall of the theatre being made of glass, overlooking a garden, to reduce fatigue during prolonged surgeries.
  • A separate well-equipped operation theatre, utilized for minor surgical procedures is located in the OPD complex of the centre

Intensive Care Unit

A Six-bedded, well-equipped intensive care unit is available for postoperative monitoring and management of critically ill patients.

Wards

The centre wards has 50 beds, of which 30 are in the general ward and the rest are in private rooms. The hospital has been designed to provide patients with a pleasant ambience for quick recovery. High quality patient care is provided by dedicated and well-qualified nursing staff.

Minor oral Surgery

The department has well-planned and spacious clinic to handle the procedures of exodontia and other minor surgical procedures done under local anaesthesia. Undergraduates and postgraduates are trained in this section for minor oral surgical procedures. 15 dental chairs cater the need for these procedures. Recently another section has been added with the state of art, fully air conditioned and compartmentalized clinic comprising of four chairs exclusively for the senior postgraduates and the staff.

Dharmashala

Accommodation, free of charge for attenders of patients coming from distant places, is provided at the Dharmashala, which is attached to the hospital and is provided with all the basic amenities for a comfortable stay.

Towards Higher Learning

As a reputed teaching center the Craniofacial unit regularly organizes seminars and workshops with participation of faculty from India and abroad. Since its inception more than 25 such national and international scientific events have been conducted. The Surgical procedure in progress at Operation theatre can be projected live on to a large screen in a centrally Air conditioned 300 seating capacity auditorium. The system allows active interaction between viewers and the surgeons performing the operation.

The center has an excellent library that is stocked with specialized reference books and a wide range of international journals and a video library.

Head of the Department

Dr. C. Bhasker Rao, Prof & Head

Prof. Chava Bhasker Rao has done his B.D.S degree from Osmania University in 1965. After obtaining M.D.S degree from Bombay University in 1970, started his academic career at College of Dental Surgery, Manipal. After serving 11 years moved to Benghazi Libya where he served as both Professor and Dean of the Dental Faculty. Prof. Rao is the founder Principal of SDM College of Dental Sciences, Dharwad, since then he also has been heading the dept of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has served on various national, academic and regulatory platforms, contributing to the sustained and progressive development of dental education in the country. He has been the examiner for both B.D.S and M.D.S of several Universities in the Country. Also chairman for the D.N.B examination in the speciality of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is on the panel of examiners for the Membership in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He has also been appointed as International Advisor to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Served as a member and chairman of Boards of Studies of many Universities. He has several publications both in national and international journals. Several awards and honours have been bestowed upon him in recognition of his achievements viz, T.C. White Scholarship, R.C.P.S., U.K., Common Wealth Fellowship in U.K., FDSRCPS ad eundem, R.C.P.S, Glasgow, A.O International Fellowship, Basel, Switzerland, etc.

Academics
UG Curriculum

The main emphasis of UG training is to train the undergraduate to

  • Recognize & diagnose Head and Neck pathology.
  • Manage Medical complications in Dental Surgery & also treat medically compromised patients.
  • Perform Dental extractions and minor oral surgical procedures.
  • Basics of inpatient management.

Postgraduate curriculum:

PG course consist of 3 years of intensive training in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery and allied Medical specialities. The postgraduate trainee spends their first 10 months performing minor oral surgery. During this period they also attend lectures in basic sciences and appear Part A MFDS exams conducted by Royal college of Surgeons of Glasgow. On completion, the trainees do an 12 month rotation in Allied medical specialities. The training comprises of -

  • 3 months in Regional Neuroscience Centre.
  • 2 months in Karnataka Cancer Therapy and Research Institute.
  • 1 ½ month in General Surgery, SDM Medical College.
  • 1 ½ month in General Medicine, SDM Medical College.
  • 1 month in Orthopaedics, Kshema & Deshpande Orthopaedic Centre.
  • 1 month in Orthodontic. SDM Dental College.
  • 1 month in Radiology Dept. of SDM Medical College.
  • 15 days in Ophthalmology., SDM Medical College
  • 15 days in ENT, SDM Medical College.
On completion of the rotation the students undergo 14 months training in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. They assist / operate various surgical procedures and are involved with inpatient management. The student also has to complete a research project and submit to the Rajeev Gandhi Health University as partial requirement towards completion of the postgraduate training.
